One of the four wheel drive\u00a0trucks has moved on to become a valuable asset to the management of an important Alaskan ice road.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The 1983 truck purchased from FNW-Pacific, has now plowed 130 miles of ice road located north east of Bethel Alaska on the Kuskokwim River. The truck has been named, \u201cTumlista\u201d by its operators which means, \u201cThe one who makes a trail\u201d in the local Yupik Eskimo language. Many of the hardworking folks who build and maintain the Kuskokwim River ice road are volunteers from local tribal governments and other organizations and their previous plow equipment was fifty three years old.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1083\" src=\"https:\/\/www.freightlinernorthwest.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ice-road-truck-4-e1518104832790.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"573\" height=\"430\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The plow featured on the truck and installed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Shorty's+Shop\/@60.7951233,-161.7785231,15z\/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x1851de43090c88e2!8m2!3d60.7951233!4d-161.7785231\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc;\">Shorty&#8217;s Shop<\/span><\/a> in Bethel, AK, has been passed down\u00a0from previous ice road constructors and it is unknown exactly\u00a0how many trucks have pushed the plow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnlike the ice roads seen on TV, we don\u2019t have heavy industry behind us with funding for our road,\u201d said Mark Leary, part of the local group trying to make life safer and cheaper for the people along the river. \u201cThe 1983 truck we got from you is like brand new for us!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Kuskokwim River ice road covers 250 miles and connects approximately 15,000 people. There are no other roads in the region and without the ice road, the local population must depend on costly airplanes to move people and freight.
